This is a Region which is known as 'Entre terre et mer' as it encompasses both the delights of the French rural countryside and the Atlantic coast. There are numerous resorts along the coast which cater to the taste of all from the cosmopolitan La Rochelle and Ile de Re to Fouras, Palais sur Mer and Royan. There are many markets and spectacles during June to September but particularly in July and August and a visit to the local Tourist Information will fill you in on that season's events.Inland you have the delights of Saintes, St Jean d'Angely and Cognac. In addition there are the historic towns of Roquefort and Brouage.Each town, and many of the villages, have festivals during the summer season and Cognac has festivals dedicated to jazz, performing arts and, of course, cognac! There are municipal parks and 'Plan d'eau' for younger children and the pleasure boats at Saint Savinien are a must for the under 10 years. Food shopping can be done at Aulnay, Matha and at any of the big supermarkets and markets at Saintes and St d'Angeley. For bigger items of shopping and clothes there is Angouleme and Bordeaux, the latter being a launchpad for visiting the wine chateaux of the Medoc.
